Wear your best pair of pants this fall

There’s a chilly breeze in the air and nature’s colors have shifted. Fall has arrived and it’s time for your wardrobe to shift, too.

But before you bring out the sweaters and vests, make sure you have the pants to match your new autumn attire.

You see, not every pair of pants is meant to be worn year-round. If you want to keep impressing with your sense of style, then we’ve got some tips for you on how to find the best pair of pants that fit not only you, but also the season.

Go dark with denim jeans

Let’s start with the classic, every day go-to: the dark denim pair of jeans. Darker washes pair well with the darker, more subdued colors of your other autumn clothing preferences.

Men can even get away with wearing a nice pair of dark jeans in some business environments. The darker you go, the more business casual denim jeans can appear.

Pick up some darker khakis, too

As with denim, darker colors and hues should be dominant in your fall khakis or chinos selection, too. You can’t go wrong with something a little more earthy in color, too.

Consider switching out poplin and other lighter fabrics for something that is a little heavier. Go with twill. This fabric, as well as any oxford or oxford blends, will provide you with a some extra warmth as fall temperatures settle in and transition toward the colder months.

Ever consider adding texture?

Textured fabrics are back in style come fall. You can add a few pairs of pants made from heavier fabrics, such as corduroy. As Bloomberg points out in a post with fall pants style recommendations, corduroy has the same casual-yet-dressy feel of chinos, but adds more warmth - perfect for chilly fall days.

A pro tip to keep in mind when it comes to corduroy: The narrower the wales, or the width between the cords in the fabric, the dressier the pants. Go with wider wales and you can pull off a more casual appearance, and the pants likely will be warmer, too.

Try wool dress pants

Wool makes for some of the very best dress pants in fall. Wool is a bit heavier and is easier to dress up than many other fabric types. Wool holds up longer than cotton, too, and can keep a crisp, refined look that no other fabric can maintain.

Know the proper pant length

First up, you have to know how to determine the best pant leg length. To a certain degree, that depends on your comfort, but there are just a few general rules to guide you.

Pant legs, in general, should touch your shoes (or come just shy of that point), but not go too far. If you look like you are at risk of tripping over your pants - or actually are - then you pant legs are far too long. Time to shorten them up.

Account for the “break” in pants

Pants have a fold or creasing in the fabric right above the bottom front of the pant leg. That’s called the break. The break in a pair of pants can range from none to a lot.

There’s no rule that favors how much break you should have in your pants. However, how much break the pants have will affect not only the actual length of pant legs when they are worn, but also what your personal preference says about you.

With trousers, the break can do a lot for your overall appearance. The break can help some men appear taller and can also help with proportion.

Pants with no break at all are favored by men who prefer very precise tailoring. It gives off hip, modern and fashionable vibes. Pants with no break are often worn to touch the tip of the shoe and no further, often revealing a bit of sock.

A slight break reaches down just past the top of the shoe. It’s a little less trendy, but still shows off a sense of modern style. Go even further with a medium break - which should completely cover socks - for a more conservative, business-like approach. Medium breaks will start to show some bunching of the fabric at the shoe.

Men who prefer wider pants can pull off full breaks. This pant style will result in a lot of the pant leg bunching around the shoe. This is a style favored by older, conservative gentlemen - or those who appreciate that era’s style.

How pants should fit

How pants, whether dress or casual, should fit is a topic that will garner many different opinions. Someone who enjoys a more traditional and conservative look will tell you to allow for plenty of room. On the other hand, more modern styles - and those who have adopted them - will say even a little too much room looks baggy and has long been out of style. They’ll advise you to pick a pair of pants that fits your body.

The truth is that most men will want to aim for the middle. If you’re bigger, allow for a little more room. If you’re on the thinner side, then you can go for a slim-fitting pair of pants. Just don’t go too tight. It’s still best to leave the skinny jeans to the kids.

A great tip and rule of thumb from Style Girlfriend (she’s got great advice for guys) is to sit down when you’re trying on pants, especially dress pants. If the feel around the thighs are too tight, then it’s time to up the size or get a roomier pair. When you stand up, look to see if fabric catches around your calves - another sign that the pants are too tight-fitting.
