Here's how to choose the best dress shirt colors this spring season

Spring is finally here and it’s time to reach deeper into your closet and bring back those pops of color that you stored away for winter.

Now, if you are like many of the men who frequently shop with us here at Hansen’s Clothing, then you likely have a good number of dress and sport shirts that take up some space in your closet. Some of those shirts are better suited for winter. Those are the shirts that need to swap places with the brighter (and most likely lighter) dress and sport shirts meant for spring.

But let’s dive a little deeper into what makes a good spring color for a dress or sport shirt.

Think light and bright colors for spring sport shirts and dress shirts

What colors work best for shirts – or any other article of clothing, for that matter – is often heavily influenced by season. Spring is that time of year when bright-colored birds return to the area, colorful flowers begin to bloom and other vegetation trades its browns for greens and more lively colors.

Pink and lavender shirts work well this time of year

It’s in spring that pinks and lavenders really look great on men. They will look bright and compliment many other of the spring colors around you.

These shades of pink and lighter purples can also serve as a confidence booster when you are out and about.

Pair them with a white, grey or even a light or medium blue if you need a jacket, sport coat or other second layer when traveling to and from the office or another destination.

Go bright this season

Spring is the perfect time of year to go with that color of dress shirt or sport shirt that will really pop and brighten up your appearance. Be sure to incorporate brighter shades of the always popular blues, green and reds. However, don’t forget that you can go very bright with some orange and yellows here and there in the designs of your shirts.

These brighter garments can either be the featured piece of your outfit or you can add them into an outfit that makes them more of a highlight or accent. Your own personal preference may depend on your confidence in pulling off brighter colors.

Confidence really is the key to making bright, bold colors work, especially when it comes to shirts. So, this spring, feel free to explore brighter colors if you are feeling confident. If not, don’t worry. There are plenty of lighter options available that can still offer the same flash of color.

Light colors are more conservative than bright colors

If you aren’t sure you can pull off those bright colors, then it’s perfectly fine to focus more on lighter, not brighter. Here again, take those staple colors of any man’s closet – blue, green, or any normally neutral color – and simply focus on going a shade or two lighter in the spring.

You may be surprised at how much going lighter with dress and sport shirt colors will still give off brighter, more exciting vibes without being overly flashy.

Don’t ignore the neutrals

For some men, neutrals can be a go-to all year long. This is especially true when you want to strike the right balance between not too formal but also kind of casual. However, some men might find going all-in on neutral colors can be as bold as going with bright colors.

If you feel you are up to the task of going neutral this time of year, then seek out dress shirts that feature some beige, white, or pale grays to really bring out the cool of neutral colors. If you want, you can even find sport and dress shirts in these colors that feature a brighter or lighter highlight for just that right amount of pop in your style.

Color tips for any style of clothing

Many of the pointers on colors shared here in this blog post don’t only apply to dress and sport shirts. You can use them as a guide for other types of shirts, tops and second layers.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match those colors, either.

Of course, there are still some colors that are primarily meant for fall and winter no matter the article of clothing.

These dress and sport shirt colors are best kept around for winter

That’s right. Some shirts are best for colder weather. Fall and winter have their own sets of preferred colors that look best on men.

As we mentioned previously, many of those shirts favored for winter and often fall, too, will be of a heavier fabric or blend. Even if you have a bright-colored shirt that may look good in spring, at some point, it will become too heavy to be comfortable, especially as we enter late spring and early summer. Those dress shirts and sport shirts obviously need to be placed further back in your closet.

As for the colors, though, there are certain hues and shades that are best worn in the winter. Those bright colors and pastels we suggested you pull out this time of year are the exact opposite of what works best in winter.

During the colder months, think dark and earth tones. That will include black, dark and medium gray, darker blues, darker greens – you get the idea. It’s best to put those colors back in storage until winter returns, otherwise you might look a bit too muted and gloomy for spring.
