How to find the right men's swim trunk style, function and fit

Every man wants to look good at the beach, on the boat and everywhere else swimwear is a must. The challenge, though, is finding men’s swim trunks or other swimwear that fits just right and also has more style than your typical run-of-the-mill options.

Luckily for you, not only does Hansen’s Clothing carry a selection of quality swimwear from Peter Millar, but we’ve also put together this handy guide for selecting the right size and style so you can strike the appearance you’re aiming for while in or on the water this summer.

A brief history on men’s swimwear

Men’s swimwear has not always been the shorts or speedos we most often see today. Before the mid 1930s, men’s swimwear had to cover chests, too. In fact, the most popular swimming apparel before that point were woolen one-piece suits that had cutoff sleeves and legs.

In the 1960s, men started to see more options that included boardshorts seen today, but also wetsuits and drag suits used for training that prioritized function over style.

Today, swim trunks are by far the most common option favored by men today in the United States. Many men favor trunks as their swimsuit go-to because they can be both stylish and functional when worn in and around water.

Why swim trunks are the preferred men’s swimwear

Swim trunks have emerged as the most popular swimwear option for men because of their style, fit and function. With an appearance that looks very much like normal men’s shorts, swim trunks are made of material that is light and dries quickly.

Board shorts are a variation of swim trunks that are longer, often going past the knee. These fit closer to the torso and are common for paddleboarding, surfing and other activities in which at least some amount of time is spent above but not in the water.

Board shorts also deserve a little more attention thanks to their popularity among the active crowd. They’re perfect for a day out on the boat, or even while out on the bike trails along the beach.

There are other swimwear variations that are not as common in most U.S. regions for basic recreational use, either because of style or because of their designed function. That would include wetsuits, briefs, square shorts and jammers.

Swim trunks are versatile

But many men prefer swim trunks because they are so versatile. Even if you are not spending all your time in the water, this swimsuit option fits the bill.

Swim trunks can serve as shorts, so forget about needing to change into other bottom attire once you’re done enjoying the water. Swim trunks are also useful if part of your summer workout includes swimming. Here again, you can continue to wear the trunks for other parts of your workout without having to stop and change once you’ve gotten your laps in.

Of course, it’d be most courteous if you’re heading inside to let them dry off before completing your exercise routine indoors.

How men’s swim trunks should fit

When looking for a swimsuit that fits properly, men need to think about their body style.

Men who are tall should probably aim for swim trunks that extend to about the knee. Shorter men, about 5-foot-8 or so, are good to go with a mid-thigh length. Men who are in great shape can go with trunks that feature a closer, slimmer fit to show you don’t skip leg day at the gym.

The leaner you are, the slimmer you can go, in general. This will help your shorts not look completely oversized and awkward. Children and those younger in years can opt in for a baggier fit, though, as this does offer a little more comfort.

In general, though, you should be able to pinch about 1/2 to 1 inch of fabric on either side of your thigh to get a good fit for trunks that don't look too sloppy. There shouldn’t be much room for the trunks to sag around your waist, either, but avoid a size that is too tight.

How to pick the right color or pattern

Swim trunks truly shine and show their full range of versatility when you explore all the color and pattern options available.

The first step to finding a swim trunk color that looks good on you is to look at your own skin tone. Paler skin can be paired with muted, less vibrant colors, while men with darker skin tones should not be afraid to go bold with brighter colors.

Those muter colors would include navy, black, grey, burgundy and darker shades of green. Examples of brighter colors that look great on trunks are bright yellow, lighter hues of blue, brighter greens, red and also pastel colors.

Want to go even more bold? Swim trunks feature many options with prints and patterns that look great when worn simply while you’re out on the beach or hanging around the area grabbing a bite or a drink after spending time in the sun earlier in the day.

The same rules apply with patterns and prints, though. Follow your skin tone for cues on which colors you should look for. Paler-skinned gentlemen should probably avoid combinations with several bright colors, for example.

If the ability to go from the beach to a restaurant table is your goal, though, then consider finding swim shorts that are tailored. These can almost double as regular shorts and go perfectly with a polo or button-down sports shirt.
